Ive had real trouble writing a couple of specific music tracks over the past few months. Its been unusually slow going. And then, about an hour ago, I realised that while listening to what I was creating, I was only hearing the sound. There was no sense of colour or texture or shapes and patterns, just sound. A horrifying thought appeared: Im losing my synaesthesia! Is that why Im so bored of most music these days? Am I hearing music how normal people hear it? If so, I feel sorry for normal people as the music is merely a mix of audible waveforms rather than an enveloping experience. Individual sounds have no shape or altitude, no roughness or spiky bits, no glassy surface or abstract 3-dimensional texture. I must now surround myself and focus on the music that would previously produce in me the most intense imagery to try to claw it back. I hope it hasnt truly been lost.
