Ive had several people ask me recently what the difference between BMI and body fat are. BMI is basically a calculation based on your height/weight proportion. If you are tall and thin your BMI will be low but that doesnt mean your body fat is low. These are two totally different things. Body fat is the percentage of your weight that is body fat. For women, a healthy range is 18-27% and for men 8-18%. This can only be done by using a body fat analyzer, calipers, dunk tank, etc. I have a scale that measures body fat using bioelectrical impedance. Ive seen 120 lb women have a higher body fat than a 170 lb woman. This is because the 170 lb woman has a higher ratio of muscle:fat than the 120 lb woman. This is a good example of why your weight is not the only factor determining if you are healthy or not.
