Ive heard a lot of people saying this is a tumultuous time to be a Muslim in western society. As if recent occurrences warrant a more deliberate reaction from moderate Muslims in order to distance themselves from extreme Muslims. I disagree. I think the outrage displayed (by Muslims and non-Muslims alike) over this senseless violence is actually a testament to the progress humans are making. A century or more ago, if a murderer claimed religion (any religion) for their motivation, we wouldnt read about it in a sensational headline or vitriolic comment-sections. The murder would be committed, and there would be no reliable indication as to why it happened. These days, we can use the media coverage of a tragedy to have discussions about what is wrong with the extremist mindset, and the conclusion is invariably that Islam does not condone killing. With each terrorist who uses the name of Islam to justify his actions, we learn more about why these actions dont accurately portray what the Quran teaches. This is a time period which allows Muslims to lead their lives as visible examples, and its a time period in which we can do our own research to learn that Islam is NOT a religion of terror.
