Ive posted a ton of articles about Pope Francis since he took charge a few years back, every single one with a hashtag like #Reason23123WhyILoveTheNewPope. But not today. The Pope condemned the Paris attack, but still eschewed the complete right to insult, saying There are so many people who speak badly about religions, who make fun of them... they are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to (my dear friend) if he says a word against my mother (then he made a punching gesture). Ultimately, you can think that speech may be unnecessary or unwarranted or provocative or immoral. But you cant silence someone. You cant raise your fist in response to an insult. Something about turning a cheek comes to mind. Youd think the Pope would value that, especially as a man who runs arguably the worlds most powerful religious institution, an institution that has some history of labeling important critique as impermissible insults (shout out to Galileo though). Ideas, particularly taboo ideas like religion that contain so much power, should be freely castigated, whether the critique is as intellectual as Galileos or as insufferable as a South Park episode. We shouldnt have to worry about the Popes right hook. So the Pope should shake it off and be more bigtime. #Reason1WhyImDisappointedInTheNewPope
