Ive said it before but it bears repeating that opponents of the Affordable Care Act who criticize it as socialist or liberal either dont have a meaningful understanding of those terms or dont understand the law, or both. Beyond very vague platitudes about it being a massive government takeover of healthcare (it isnt) or an oppressive tax (its not that either), not one of these critics can articulate cogent, specific reasons why it is bad policy, let alone give serious proposals for what it should be replaced with. As the exchanges are on track to meet their initial goal of 7 million enrollees, its important to note that healthcare costs in the United States as a share of GDP have dropped for the first time since 1997, and nearly 10 million formerly uninsured/uninsurable fellow Americans now have health insurance because of Obamacare. Why is this bad? If Republicans hadnt worked so hard for four years to thwart the law, the number of newly insured Americans would be even higher. Conservatives who believe in American exceptionalism are at least right about one thing: were the only Western industrialized nation with a major political party and large population of citizens claiming to be patriotic while rooting for the failure and repeal of a law designed to provide basic health care for everyone.
