I’ve heard the statement, “Don’t seek the gift, seek the giver,” more times than I can count. That’s not a scriptural statement. Both the gift and the giver should be sought. It’s true — there is a Scripture that has been quoted over and over again that is “Seek the Lord, and He is the giver.” But in 1 Corinthians 12:31 it is commanded to, “Eagerly desire (or seek) the greater (or best) gift.” In fact, 1 Timothy 4:14 and 2 Timothy 1:6 tells that, “The gift in you is not to be neglected, but rather to be stirred up. The gifts are already there, so why not seek after them.” It is what we are supposed to do. So, if you have been putting yourself down about asking God for a gift, stop doing that right now. He tells us to ask, seek and knock. Asking, seeking and knocking aren’t to be done at once, but continuously until it is received. What does the word seek mean? To me, it means to diligently look. Look hard and long for the things you want. If you lose something of great value, you wouldn’t give up looking for it after a few minutes. You would more than likely look for it for a long time, several hours, days, or even months. Well, God and His gifts are of great value. Anything you receive from the Almighty is of great value, and it should be treated as such. Never give up seeking the Lord or His wonderful gifts. You really can’t have the Lord without having gifts, because He is so giving. Don’t seek the giver without seeking the gifts. It’s a package deal — you don’t just get one. You get both, plus so much more for one price. And Jesus paid that price. You are loved so very much!
