JAIPUR: The BJP could be romping home to victory in the coming Rajasthan assembly polls, while the Congress looks set to suffer major losses, according to an opinion poll conducted by a TV channel. The poll, done by CSDS for CNN-IBN, suggested that the BJP would win anywhere between 115 and 125 seats in the 200-member assembly, giving it a comfortable majority though short of a two-thirds tally. If this prediction comes true, it would see the saffron party gain 40-50 seats from what it won in 2008. Interestingly, these predictions are despite the finding that 50% of those polled were satisfied with the state governments performance and 55% were satisfied with chief minister Ashok Gehlots performance. The poll said the Congress could end up with just 60-68 seats, a sharp decline from the 96 it won last time. Coming on the heels of the same pollster predicting even more impressive wins in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for the BJP, this adds to the perception of the momentum favouring the party in the run-up to the 2014 general elections. The BJP, the poll suggested, would gain nearly 7% in vote share to reach a tally of 41%, while the Congress would lose nearly 5% from the 2008 level to settle at about 32%. In the perception battle between BJPs CM-designate Vasundhara Raje and Gehlot, the challenger has a clear lead with 51% backing her and only 27% wanting the incumbent back, the poll revealed.
