JOyKE of the DAY - A Preacher’s Nightmare One Sunday Morning, just five minutes before he was to take the pulpit, the preacher was completely blank. He didn’t have the first idea on what to preach about. He was not a highly educated man and depended more on the Spirit and on Inspiration of the moment than on long hours of study, and this method had always worked well for him, but today he was a “clean slate.” After asking for an extra solo special and a testimony from Brother Blabber Lipz, he still had nothing. To dismiss early in this Church who bragged about how long their services were was equivalent to signing his resignation. So there was only one thing left to do. He announced that he would open the Bible at a chance and plop his finger down and wherever it landed would be his sermon text. This really impressed his congregation and the verse that his finger landed on was 1 Corinthians 16:22 which says, “ If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.” He had never seen or heard that word “Anathema” before and since he read by sight and by recognition and was not practiced in sounding out the syllables, well, this word really threw him. To be fair, it is a Greek word transliterated right into English and it is not used much in normal conversation. If he had a modern translation he might have seen, “If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed when the Lord comes,” but his King James Version and his lack of preparation left him with “Anathema Maranatha.” So this is how the sermon went: “Now the Bible says here in 1 Corinthians 16:22, “If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be A ??? If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be A, A, A – rhrhrh (He cleared his throat a few times). Excuse me, I got something caught in my throat. If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Ana, Ana, Ana??? Well, If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be a nabbing and a grabbing at Him.”
