January 31, 2014: All the morning data has arrived and been analyzed. Temperatures during the Tuesday event are going to be in the low to mid 30s. That means it is still too close to call on rain vs freezing rain. I suspect parts of southeast MO and southern IL will mostly be freezing rain, sleet/ice. I suspect area from Marion/Carbondale southward into western Kentucky will be in the question mark region rain vs freezing rain/ice. We are still 3-4 days out from the event. That is a long time in the weather world. Data is starting to come into agreement, however, on what is going to happen. All of the data I have analyzed shows temperatures very very close to freezing (30s) over much of the area for the Tuesday event. Most of the precipitation will fall in a window of 6-12 hours. Centered on Tuesday morning into Tuesday evening. Could begin as early as late Monday night (Tuesday morning). Base your weekend preparations based on the potential for some accumulating ice on Tuesday. Still too early for numbers and still too early to say exactly which counties will be the cutoff between rain and ice. Some chance for light snow late on Sunday/Sunday night, as well. Focus right now - in this post - is on the Tuesday system.
