Jean Michel Basquiat, he’s brilliant obviously, but he was also a token black person. If he looked like Ving Rhymes I don’t think he would have been invited to dinner parties. If he looked like the guy from The Green Mile (Michael Clarke Duncan), I don’t think he’ll be on the cover of magazines or posing with Warhol. It’s like Black artists and artists of colour are exoticized in the art world, to the point where what we produce has to be primal, or it has to come from some type of pain, or a window into urban life. No one wants to talk about race, but it’s very racially propelled. - Ferrari Sheppard on the persona of black artists.
