Jellyfish in UK coastal waters - Can citizen science help our understanding of spatial and temporal patterns and trends? A paper that examined 9 years of data from a citizen science jellyfish recording scheme in UK coastal waters shows more sightings per kilometre in south west England than anywhere else. There was no obvious long-term trend upwards or downwards, but the latest figures for 2013 and 2014 reveal a huge surge in sightings. The research was published in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association (JMBA). Is this year particularly ‘bad’ for jellyfish? The MBA’s Dave Conway says probably not. “Jellyfish invasions happen every year and reports are often exaggerated. They can be very localised events related to weather conditions, so appear worse than they actually are.” More information: mba.ac.uk/2014/07/22/jellyfish-in-uk-coastal-waters-can-citizen-science-help-our-understanding-of-spatial-and-temporal-patterns-and-trends/
