Jesus (Isa) : .......................... The great scholar al-Tabari (838-923) has this account of the three wise men who bore gifts for the Christ-child: What is the meaning of the gold, the myrrh and the frankincense, which you are offering in preference to all other gifts? And they said: These are symbolic of Him, for gold is the lord of the material world, and this prophet is the lord of the people of his time; and myrrh is used to heal wounds and sores and thus God through this prophet will heal the crippled and the sick; and the smoke of incense reaches heaven as does no other smoke, and thus this prophet will be raised to God in heaven as no other prophet of his time shall be. According to most sources, the three wise men were Indian, Persian, and Arab. Very likely at least one of them (if not all) had to come via the incense caravan route from Yemen up the Hijaz through Makkah and Yathrib to reach their destination of Bethlehem in Palestine. From the Quran (19:29-33), we know that Jesus was gifted with speech even whilst in the cradle to proclaim his prophetic station: They said, ‘How can we speak to a child in the cradle?’ (Jesus) said, ‘Indeed, I am a slave of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am, and has commanded me to me pray and give charity as long as I remain alive. And (has made) me kind to my mother, and did not make me arrogant or miserable. And peace be upon me the day I was born, and the day I will die, and the day I will be raised alive.’
