Jesus challenges us to serve. Wednesday Jesus said, ‘Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, “Come and have your meal immediately”?’ (Lk 17: 7) This wouldn’t happen – servants are expected to serve – but what does service mean to Jesus? We are made in the image of God the Trinity, a community of love, who give themselves to each other totally in love. In our world, we reflect their self-giving love by serving each other. To show us how privileged service is, Jesus came as our servant and loved us to the end. Loving Jesus, show me how to serve. Let me confront the pride that undermines my capacity to show your love in my actions. Pray the prayer that Jesus taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen. Continue your prayer through this day by noticing your attitude when you are expected to serve.
