Jobs are found everywhere just open up ur minds eyes and cast away the ghost of Fear. I once listened to the retired president while addressing the nation during a public holiday and he said “wewe usichague kazi,na hiyo kazi unayo ifanya iyo ndio kazi, hakuna ingiinee, hakuunaah! Wewe waregarega hukunahuku eti hauna kazi, tafuta kazi hiyo ,na ufanye kazi hiyo! I was waiting for “bure kabisa” but he didn’t continue and his speech came to an end.I tried to decipher the meaning from his words but I couldn’t at the time make sense of his words until far much latter when I reflected on his words in one afternoon while sipping a cold tusker in White Rhino hotel. There was about five waiters in the hotel and the customers were not many ,so the waiters were serving customers at their own pace. I decided to keep myself busy by observing the behavior of each of the 5 waiters as they moved around serving the customers. I noticed that despite the 5 waiters doing the same job, each had his own peculiar way of doing it which was the key ingredient that separated them! I picked two characters, one looked aloof and disconnected, he could rarely go to a customer unless beckoned and on approaching the customer, it was the same tired face. The other one was cheerful, happy and was in fact serving most the customers, he had that cheerful face that could extract a tip from the meanest customer and seated where I was, I could tell that the guy was really enjoying his job. These were five guys, who came to do the same job which they were interviewed for and selected as the best among the many applicants who queued and missed a chance. But, they were all working differently in a job which didn’t require much effort be it in strength or intellect. I could not understand why the lazy looking fellow was behaving so, until the former president’s statement flooded my mind “ Usichague kazi, nahiyo unayoifanya hiyo ndio kazi” These two fellows were a very good example. The lazy one alikuwa akichagua kazi, na the active guy hakuwa ana chagua because he knew that hiyo ndio kazi! His enthusiasm and passion was paying divided because, I could see the customers tipping him willingly and I am sure generously. That day, I parted with a tip of ksh 200 and I wish you were there because the guy appreciated the gift to an extent that I was almost tempted to add him 50bob. The lazy guy I can bet went home empty handed because he didn’t make an effort to earn the tips and surprisingly enough, just imagine he had equal chances with anybody else to earn the tips!. The above incidence threw me into a further wilderness of thoughts and I looked across all the careers! And needless to say I was shocked to note that in every career, you will always find successful people and unsuccessful ones, happy and unhappy ones, name anything and you will always get its opposite almost in equal measures. My conclusion my dear friends was that ,success has got nothing to do with the job which one is doing but has everything to do with the state of the persons mind or the attitude. Last week I watched in citizen TV the daughter of the former cabinet minister Hon Paul Ngei who earns her living by selling condoms in K Street at night. She looked so passionate about her job and I could tell that, passion was the single most ingredient that was driving her. It is about the person doing the job but not the job which is being done that matters! It is everything about the doer and the amount of enthusiasm, passion and attitude that the doer carries with him that matters. Whether you are selling Sukuma, cabbages, tomatoes, mitumba ,touting etc ,all what matters is YOU. You are the most important tool that shapes the wood(job) into any design which you want!. U don’t have to whine that you don’t have a job, cast your shyness, pride, fear away and put on the overall ,do whatever you have chosen to do with un measurable passion and very soon you will be on your way to the top. You can sell condoms, Njugu karanga ,sweets, sukuma wiki etc ,think of something worth doing whether paying or not and very soon somebody will appreciate your efforts. After watching Ngeis daughter on TV, I can authoritatively say that there are jobs for everyone in Kenya now and nobody should go around without a job. U doesn’t have to wait for Uhuruto to create one for u, create one for you. A popular Maize roaster in Nyeri confided to me that he makes between 1500 to 2500 on better days .Have you ever imagined that a maize roaster could make such an amount in a day?. Factor this; if he buys one maize at 5 bob and he cuts it into 5 pieces of, 5bobs each, he makes 20 bob from one comb! He will then need to sell 125 combs which you do agree with me it’s not magical!
