John Anderson, founder of Odradek Records, will be speaking at Classical:NEXT in Vienna this May as part of a panel discussion hosted by Gramophone magazine’s James Jolly, along with Marc Tritschler of Testklang and Gabriel Prokofiev of Nonclassical, about new strategies for producing and marketing classical recordings. Odradeks perspective on the problems facing the current classical record industry is that traditional label models are strained in times typified by ground-up collaborative models of group-moderation and the nominally free distribution of content. At Odradek Records, A&R is decided by roster members directly, democratically evaluating anonymously submitted demos. Our goal is to create a system of meritocratic evaluation analogous to the scientific peer review process, that responds to the publics expectations of fairness while cutting through their marketing fatigue, in order to provide both a credible and an artistically strong product with cultural relevance. It should make for an interesting discussion with two other unique and very dynamic labels, and will surely allow for a fruitful sharing of ideas.
