John Biddle was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1792, the son of Charles Biddle, former Vice President of Pennsylvania, and nephew of Commodore Nicholas Biddle. Commodore Biddle replaced Commodore Perry in Key West, Florida. Civil War Brig. General Andrew Porter was married to Margaret Falconer Biddle. Brig. General Andrew Porter and Gen. Horace Porter worked in the Lincoln and Grant administration. Brig. General Andrew Porter was the grandson of Andrew Porter, who married Elizabeth, daughter of William and Eliz Todd Parker. Their son was Michigan Governor George Bryan Porter. Gov. Porter licensed John Jacob Astors business, the American Fur Company, to do business in the territory. I recollect Henry Hastings Sibley was agent the agent for American Fur. William Howland Crapo, trustee for the Howland and Hetty Green estates, became governor of Michigan too. And so did my great-grandfather. He was the 21st governor of Michigan (1887-1891). He was a pioneer founder of the Republican party. My mother worked for the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. in 1950. She lived in Arlington, Virgina, where my father and brother were buried in the National Cemetery in 1959. He was attached to the staff of General Winfield Scott on the Niagara Frontier for most of the war of 1812. He became captain in the Forty-second Infantry October 1, 1813, served as assistant inspector general with the rank of major from June 19, 1817 to June 1, 1821,and commanded Fort Shelby in Detroit for some time. After leaving the military, Biddle was appointed paymaster and Indian agent at Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1821 and 1822. He was register of the land at Detroit, Michigan in of Michigan Territory, 1823–1837; commissioner for determining the ancient land claims at Detroit, Mackinaw, Sault Ste. Marie, Green Bay, and Prairie du Chien. John Biddle was president of the Michigan Central railroad.
