John Morse, the anti-gun state senator that was at the head of the recent passage of a string of new gun control laws in Colorado, has officially been recalled! The committee behind the recall effort submitted over 16,000 signatures to the secretary of state for verification. 7,178 were verified signatures were needed to officially have a recall election. Over 10,000 were found to be verified and the secretary of state signed off yesterday. According to the Washington Times, Meanwhile, Mr. Morse, a Colorado Springs Democrat, released a statement Monday on his Facebook page asking for out-of-state help from those in traditionally liberal cities to help fight the recall effort. “We can get phone lists to you and things like that and have you help from Boston, Massachusetts, or San Francisco, California,” said Mr. Morse in a video message. “So thanks for all that you’ve done and thanks for all that you’re going to do as we move forward to take on this tiger.” Mr. Morse has 15 days to challenge the signatures, but if his protest fails, the governor will be charged with setting a recall election date between 45 and 75 days from the end of the protest period. Morse was already planning on retiring in the near future, and through a loophole a Democrat may continue to occupy his seat. If Morse resigns his seat, a Democrat vacancy committee would appoint a successor to carry out the remainder of his term. Recall activists also submitted signatures to recall State Sen. Angela Giron, another prominent anti gun politician. They are awaiting verification of those signatures. These recall efforts are seen to be playing out on the national stage as a referendum on the gun control debate. These two recall efforts are the first two successful recalls of sitting Colorado lawmakers in history.
