John Muir, the father of the National Park system would not stand - TopicsExpress

John Muir, the father of the National Park system would not stand still for this. The park service released a memo recently planning for cuts to parks across the board -- cuts to every park, from Yosemite to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore . Send Sens. Baldwin and Johnson an urgent plea to keep our parks open. Wisconsin’s national parks, monuments and historic sites attracted $24 million in tourism spending in 2011 for hiking and camping trips, wildlife viewing and more [2]. But year after year, Congress slashes funding for programs that keep our parks open. Current cuts to national park funding will result in reduced hours of operation, fewer services, and in some cases, even closure. Current park funding proposals are sitting on our senators’ desk right now. Tell Sens. Baldwin and Johnson to protect our parks. The programs that have been established to protect our parks and special places are critical if we intend to keep our drinking water and air clean, wildlife habitats protected and keep our parks, beaches and campgrounds open. Our parks deserve better. Wisconsin’s national parks, from the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, provide critical habitat for species and keep our air and water clean. Our national parks have provided us with so many great memories. Now it is up to us to return the favor. Megan Severson Wisconsin Environment Advocate
