Johnny Noubarian, another Famous Fairmonter who lived at 356 Tweedsmuir Ave. Heres a bio on John from the London Big Band website. For many years John Noubarian has occupied his own personal niche in Londons music scene. Probably no London musician can claim to having backed so many acclaimed Jazz artists as John Noubarian. With John on piano, Eddy Bell on string bass and Bob Rawling on drums the trio for several years backed world-class traveling performers at a supper club called Campbells in London in around the late 1950s and early 60s. Campbells was Londons only Jazz Club and prominent artists were booked there on a regular basis. A club with this specialized entertainment format has to have a talented ensemble to back these singers and instrumentalists as they usually performed with limited music or in most cases no music at all. London had such a capability led by John Noubarians trio that could back these artists with professional aplomb. There wasnt any Jazz standard (music) that they couldnt execute to the featured artists satisfaction. They were experienced jazzmen and it would always surprise the player to discover such a high caliber trio could be found in London. Even renowned artists such as Ben Webster (tenor sax) Bobby Hackett (cornet) Wingy Malone (trumpet) Ernestine Anderson (Jazz vocalist) and many others appeared at Campbells. Some of these Jazz giants recorded on various popular Jazz labels e.g. Blue Note and were show-cased on many Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts. They were frequently the head liners on the Jazz Festivals of the day. John Noubarians expertise has always been the Jazz trio or quartet. Professional circles in Canada and other parts of the States were to this day aware and respectful of his considerable musical talents. He belongs in the Whos Who of Canadian Jazz. We can rightfully assume that if John (and his group) hadnt been of this caliber many of these Jazz artists would not have appeared here in London at that time. These acts needed very capable backing. You not only had to be technically proficient to accommodate them but you had to have the back-ground to know the Jazz literature of that period. Its an unique art form with its own creative style and feel that demands considerable expertise. John and his trio could extemporize in any key, Jazz style and tempo. This ability is a much needed skill in this musical genre. It was a period in Londons history where supper clubs were providing a variety of entertainment for the local populace. John Noubarian filled a special and unique need and Londoners were able to enjoy many Jazz performers during this Golden Era.
