[Johor pushes biotech potential] JOHOR BARU: Johor has the potential to be in the forefront of global biotechnology production by focusing on the agricultural, food and medical sectors. The state has much to offer foreign companies to set up operations here, said Johor Biotechnology and Biodiversity Corp (J-Biotech) chief executive officer Wan Amir-Jeffery Wan Abd Majid. He pointed out that Johor was the biggest food manufacturer in the country, and also had the biggest oil palm plantations in Peninsular Malaysia. “We have the raw materials, land and the right ecosystem. Two biotechnology companies from the United States and India involved in medical production are interested in setting up their base here,” he said at a press conference yesterday. Wan Amir also said that J-Biotech representatives made a working visit to several places in the United States and Taiwan over the last two months to look at the latest technologies in use there. He added that the two countries were ahead of Malaysia in terms of technology and the visit was useful for the corporation to implement such methods here. Wan Amir said a biotechnology hub in Senai equipped with world-class facilities was expected to start operations within the next two years. “J-Biotech will sign several agreements with foreign and local companies during the Bio Johor 2014 Conference and Exhibition that will be held here from Aug 25 to Aug 27. Forty-seven biotechnology experts from 10 countries, including Australia, South Korea and Germany, will speak at the conference, while 70 organisations will take part in the accompanying exhibition.
