Jonathan still popular in North, South-South, says Opara Port Harcourt – Mr Austin Opara, a former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, said on Monday that President Goodluck Jonathan enjoyed 95 per cent support of the people of the South-South zone. Opara said in an interview in Port Harcourt that it was not true that the people of the North were against tenure for Jonathan in 2015. `The South-South as a zone is 95 per cent or more in support of Jonathan’s candidature; and in support of a South- South president. “It is just a few self- centred, and over ambitious persons from the zone that are opposed to Jonathan’s re-election. “Can you say that Northerners are 100 per cent against Jonathan? The answer is no. Jonathan has support in the North and clearly majority of South- Southerners are behind Jonathan. “The ones that are opposed to Jonathan’s candidature are pushing for it for selfish reasons because they believe they are not being carried along or they are not benefitting from the present dispensation; so they want power to shift so that they can benefit. “We should move from self-syndrome (of some politicians) to having the interest of the nation at heart because that is what is important.” Opara said that Jonathan- led administration had shown passion in tackling insecurity, stressing that the spate of bombing and other security challenges had reduced in recent months. The former federal lawmaker said that the privatisation of the power sector was a clear indication of Jonathan’s commitment to transforming the nation’s economy through private participation. He expressed the belief that the Federal Government’s Transformation Agenda was on course and would deliver the desired dividends before the 2015 general elections. Opara alleged that some opposition politicians were behind the delayed completion of the East- West road just to discredit the Jonathan-led administration. According to him, the President has given the assurance that the road project will be completed in 2014. The former legislator called for a speedy resolution of the ASUU- FGN face-off to enable students to return to the lecture halls. -VANGUARD NEWS
