Jose Rizal on student hooligans: Dear mothers, please don’t be worried and angry that your sons and daughters, now iskolar ng bayan, have become “hooligans” for the truth and the nation. Don’t expect them to be “prim and proper” just like the products of friars’ education. Our national hero has this to say to you, as mothers: “What could the offspring be of a woman whose virtue is to murmur prayers, whose only knowledge is derived from awit, novena, prayer-books, miraculous tales intended to fool men, with no other recreation but frequent confessions of the same sins. What sons would she have but sacristans, servants of the curate, or devotees of cockfighting? …The mother who teaches nothing else but how to kneel and kiss the hand should not expect any other kind of children but stupid ones or oppressed slaves….” Some parents of student activists want their children to kiss the hands of their professors, to kneel in the libraries, to contemplate in their dorms. Rizal would say today: What sons and daughter would she have but docile civil servants, servants of the corrupt bureacracy, or devotees of lotto on-line betting? The mother who teaches nothing else but how to kneel and kiss the hands of their teachers to get higher grades should not expect any other kind of children but stupid ones or oppressed slaves….”
