Joss Whedon offers us a contemporary take on Shakespeare’s classic comedy about love, mistaken identity, lies, deception, revenge and redemption. He has relocated the action from a 16th century Sicilian port city to the warmer climes of modern Santa Monica. Whedon shot the film at his own house and gives the film a low rent aesthetic. It was shot in crisp black and white, although Jay Hunter’s cinematography certainly adds to the atmosphere. The film evokes the feel of the screwball comedies of the 40s. The ensemble cast seem to have fun with the material and they bring a freshness to the Bard’s poetic verse and delightful puns. This mischievous version could easily be dismissed as a glorified home movie, albeit one not without a certain amount of charm, but it has made the Bard accessible to a whole generation of superhero nerds.
