Journal Entry #12 Speaking is one of the four language skills; As writing speaking is a productive skill; That means that involves producing language rather than receiving it. Speaking involves things like making use of grammar, vocabulary, functions, body language, register to speak appropriately, intonation, oral fluency, word and sentence stress, etc. Fluency and accuracy are important in successful oral communication. Speaking involves different sub-skills. I believe a good way to improve learners speaking is by helping him/her to use grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation correctly. Activities like discussions and explaining solutions help students to communicate. Speaking is a complex skill so learners may need a lot of help; In order to speak learners need enough vocabulary, time to organize their ideas and previous pronunciation practice of words and expressions; A speaking lesson plan I find useful is: 1) Give Ss an introduction to the topic of the lesson plus activities including a focus on the new language; 2) Give Ss activities or tasks in which they have opportunities to use the new language (these activities may move from controlled to freer activities depending on the class and learning context); 3) Give Ss activities in which learners do free speaking about the topic of the lesson. In speaking activities it is better to correct politely without interrupting SS while they are speaking, once they are finished with their speech teacher can use error correction.
