Joys of old Music and Books BabyBoomerBookNostalgia.blogspot Do you ever hear an old rock song and it takes you back in time? Do you remember where you were and what was going on at that time in your life? I do. I love to hear an old song that makes me remember what I was feeling at that time and place so many years ago. It is such a magic, nostalgic feeling! When I hear Daydream Believer by the Monkees, I remember running laps in P.E. class, and the teacher had the radio sitting on the edge of the stage. youtube/watch?v=2uohP4gk0wU When I hear Midnight Confessions by the Grass Roots, I remember getting that 45 record for Christmas and listening to it in the kitchen because the record player was on top of the refrigerator so my little brothers and sisters could not reach it. youtube/watch?v=5nZnqtDdsws When I hear Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys, I remember my boyfriend and I kissing for the first time. youtube/watch?v=Eab_beh07HU A few years later, I remember crying and listening to Everything I Own by Bread right after my husband of six months left for three months of National Guard training. youtube/watch?v=THtMy57rtlE Well, to my surprise and delight, reading these old books that are on my blog, BabyBoomerBookNostalgia.blogspot that I first read in the fifties and sixties give me this same wonderful magical feeling! They take me back to the farm where we lived north of Colmar, Illinois, just over the fence south of Hills Grove Cemetery in McDonough County Illinois. I went to grade school at Colchester, Illinois. When I read these wonderful, special books, I can see in my mind the little library there, the classrooms, and the teachers. I can see my classmates. Even though we moved away from this area when I was eleven years old, I am still friends with some of my classmates from them, one on particular, my very best childhood friend that lived right across the road from me. I know we cant live in the past, nor would I want to. I did not have my own wonderful family then, my husband, five children, and nine grandchildren. What I did have was my wonderful childhood, my parents, and six younger brothers and sisters. There were seven of us kids and we did not have lots of money. Sometimes I compare us to the Waltons, although we were at least a decade more modern than they were. I did not realize it then, but we lived a very sheltered life that I am thankful for. I recently watched the movie The Help with a setting that took place simultaneously with my childhood. I realized that when I was a child, I had no idea such terrible things were going on in places far from me. Also, I thought everyone went to Sunday School and church and believed in God and Jesus. I thought everyone visited their grandmas on Sunday afternoons and everyone celebrated Christmas with their families. I remember my mother saying, in more recent years, how fortunate our family is. With her seven children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren, we were so blessed that, with so many of us, none of us had been through a serious illness or tragedy. Then in 2011 came the accident and the double funeral. Mom was driving herself and dad to a nearby lunch outing just a few miles from their home and they hit a train... Our family is all so close and always get together frequently for family activities. Mom and Dad were the life of the party at every family event, even in their late seventies and early eighties. We all miss them so much even three years later. One of the reasons I love reading these old books, is because reading them takes me back to a time when Mom and Dad were still here. I dont live in the past but it is a wonderful place to visit and these old books are a joy to read just like hearing old music.
