Just came back from an interesting brain-storming session on challenges and opportunities for Arab media. these were some of the views shared inside the room; - The media dictatorships in the Arab World are much more difficult to break up that the political dictatorships - There is need to support media that is willing to speak out and to commit to both professional integrity and international values of human rights, accountability and transparency - Media illiteracy around the globe is the biggest challenge facing societies and the profession of watchdog journalism - the biggest challenge facing Arab media ise the minds of most chief editors that are stuck in the mold of the 18th century. They do not want to change the rules of the game or drop pre-conceived ideas about their role and duties in the service of the public.
