Just over 8 years ago, I met the brilliant journalist Juan Carlos Llorca and I was instantly bowled over. We were working on a film about vigilante killings in Guatemala and he proved to be one of the bravest and most honourable people I have ever met. As well as being insanely intelligent and funny - wow, that man could make me laugh. His journalism was first class; because of his investigations into the illegal adoption trade between the US and Guatemala, the Guatemalan government introduced adoption reforms. We worked together again in El Salvador, on another dangerous subject. He kept us safe and sane - and, as usual, was always two steps ahead of everyone else. A few days ago, Juan Carlos died in his home in El Paso. I have lost a dear friend and the world has lost a brilliant journalist. Here are the two films we made together.
