Just stopped by the Maui Humane Society and was shocked to see HC&S plowing the recently burned field that is adjacent to the animal shelter on a day when the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory. The shelter, the employees, and all of the animals are being inundated by a tremendous amount of dust that is blowing off of their field from their plowing operations. I have attached a video and some pictures. When I called Mr. Sortel, once of the supervisors with HC&S to ask him if they could stop plowing for the day due to the winds, he told me to call the office on Monday if I wanted to complain. I called their office which listed the number for their security team but when I called the security number and explained the situation they told me that there were not any supervisors on site to respond. When I asked if they could call somebody on location at the field in question they hung up on me. Mayor Arakawa....can you look into this please. This has been an ongoing problem on Maui and residents are fed up. Please also download the Maui Clean Air app on your smartphone and use it to file a complaint about cane smoke, ash, and dust. The EPA has opened an investigation and is using every complaint that is filed with the application as part of their investigation.
