So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God’…” (Luke 1:34-35, the Holy Bible). -ooo- AQUINO’S “KISS OF DEATH” FOR 2016 POLLS: “Never again, not anymore!” This, in a nutshell, was the near-unanimous reaction of people who responded to the survey question which the DZEC, 1062 kHz radio program “Tambalang Batas at Somintac” asked on Monday, December 15, 2014. The question? “Will you vote for the presidential candidate that President Aquino will endorse in 2016?” Except for one or two listeners who did not directly answer that question, all the others who took time out to respond were vehement in their reaction: no, they will never vote for any candidate that Aquino will endorse in 2016, because those who will be endorsed by him will simply continue the on-going corruption and inefficiency and incompetence in government. “Aquino’s endorsement will be a kiss of death for the candidates he will choose,” many of the listeners said in their text messages to the program’s text number, 0932 422 2572. The program’s survey question was based by Vic Somintac, my co-anchor in the program, and myself, on a news headline that said Aquino will play the role of a “political kingmaker” who will choose the next president two years or so from now. -ooo- ACCURACY OF SURVEY RESULTS CONTESTED: Which brings me to an important question: if there is an undeniable rejection of Aquino and his government by our listeners at DZEC, as manifested by their responses to each and every survey question we are propounding on a daily basis, where are Pulse Asia and the other survey firms which are saying that Aquino’s ratings are going up getting their data? Is Pulse Asia or the other survey firms really conducting any real survey? And, assuming they are conducting real surveys, are they asking a sufficient number of our people to enable them to conclude that the results they are releasing represent the true sentiment of a majority of the people? Why are many people saying that, despite the fact that the survey firms seem to be conducting many surveys, not one of them have been made respondents or were asked in those surveys? If only some 1,200 people are being allegedly asked in those surveys, can we rely that their views do represent the 100 million or so Filipinos? -ooo- BREACH OF CONFIDENTIALITY IN ERAP CASE: The story by a major Manila newspaper detailing a supposed draft of a decision being circulated at the Supreme Court on the expulsion of Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada was a sure scoop by its writer, my friend Jomar Canlas. In fact, it is a scoop of the highest order because it would seem that Canlas was able to get a copy of the draft decision, and write its details in his news story. But there is something else that greatly bothers me, and it is not the fact that Canlas seems to have replaced an old friend of mine, Rey Panaligan of the Manila Bulletin, in getting scoops from the Supreme Court. When I myself was a reporter covering the Supreme Court a few years back, our group relied on Panaligan to get advance and inside stories from the tribunal. What is bothering me? It is the question of confidentiality. Draft decisions are supposed to be draft decisions, and are purely internal to the court, and are not supposed to be made public yet, owing to the fact that the opinion expressed therein by the supposed writer could still change, depending on the views of the other justices.
