KARACHI: A sessions court on Tuesday sentenced a woman to life in prison in a murder case. The court found Hajra guilty of killing Asghar Ali with the help of absconding accomplices in her house in the Old Golimar area in August 2012. The district and sessions judge (west), Ghulam Mustafa Memon, pronounced the judgement after recording testimonies of witnesses and final arguments from both sides. The court observed that the complainant and other private witnesses clearly deposed that the offence was committed by the accused with the help of absconders and the evidence of witnesses remained unshakable despite being subjected to cross-examination by the defence counsel. The body was found in the rented house of the female accused and she was also seen at the scene of the crime shortly after the incident by the landlord while a last seen witness was also examined, who saw the deceased going towards the same area just before the incident, it added. The court further ruled that the case was based upon circumstantial evidence and all the circumstances were competed and all the gaps in the chain of evidence were well bridged. According to the prosecution, the deceased was a friend of the son of the female accused and had visiting terms with him and on Aug 22, he went to the house of the accused for Eid greeting. However, the accused with the help of her brother and two other relatives killed him by slitting his throat. The woman was arrested on the following day. A case was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the deceased’s brother at the Pak Colony police station. Nazeer, Hakeem and Mohammad Aslam were the absconding accused in the case. The accused was produced before the court in custody and while extending the benefit of 382-B (period of detention to be considered while awarding sentence of imprisonment) of the criminal procedure code, the judge remanded the convict back to prison along with a conviction warrant to serve out the remainder of the sentence.
