This week, I have added a video of folk singers Jackie Oates and Chris Sarjeant blissfully being punted down the river Thames in Oxford, singing Sleepers Awake. The instrument that Jackie is playing is called a Shruti box, which is an instrument that traditionally works on a system of bellows. It is similar to a harmonium and was originally used to provide a drone in a practice session or concert of Indian classical music. Adjustable buttons allow tuning. Nowadays, electronic shruti boxes are commonly used. The shruti box is sometimes seen in contemporary folk music, as in this song. Even though the instrument is of Eastern origin; used in this type of song, it has a rather haunting medieval sound methinks!
