Kardzhali – a dog shelter from hell No need to get emotional - TopicsExpress

Kardzhali – a dog shelter from hell No need to get emotional about what we saw at the dog shelter in Kardzhali, as there is no adequate word to describe the shock, horror and disgust of what we saw there. We visited the shelter on an inspection together with officers from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and the District Food Safety Directorate. The inspection was following our complaint to the Agency that, according to an article in the local newspaper, out of more than 700 captured dogs in 2012, half have died in the shelter – as a result of diseases and fights between each other. As expected, we found numerous violations, including the fact that sick dogs are not treated, the animals are not fed and walked regularly, the kennels are seldom cleaned and disinfected and have turned into an incubator for diseases. During the past 4 months 114 dogs have died in the shelter and only 35 have been neutered. With regards to the quality of work of the so called veterinarian, we would prefer to avoid any comment – it is enough to mention that he did not have at his disposal even very basic medicines and supplies. There was also no running water in the surgery room. We need your support to change things: 1. Please write to the mayor of Kardzhali and ask him to change the conditions in the shelter: [email protected] 2. We need local volunteers, who could visit the shelter on a regular basis and help with feeding and walking the animals as well as check whether the kennels are being cleaned and disinfected. Please write to: [email protected] 3. The dogs from the photos need new homes – they are captured because considered aggressive but in fact all are friendly. There is a maiged and weak puppy in one of the kennels, which need urgent help.
