Kerema league up, running The National, Tuesday April 29th, 2014 AFTER 12 years Kerema Rugby League are finally back in the fold. With local talents wanting to be exposed, Kerema Rugby League headed by former Kumul Haoda Kouoru as president and Emmanuel Morehari as vice-president have re-opened the door with their affiliation to the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL). Kouoru said it has been a long time since the Kerema league registered under the national body but they see a future under the new regime under board chairman Sandis Tsaka, which is why they have affiliated to be a part of the national programmes on offer. “Our league is surviving but the technical knowledge of coaches and trainers need to be upgraded to keep up with the rest,” he said. Initiator of the Team Kumul programme and Kumul head coach Mal Meninga, who was on hand to witness the occasion said that the Kerema League will benefit greatly when the programme is rolled out. PNGRFL southern region director Gwaibo Mairi welcomed Kerema League and looked forward to working closely with Kouoru and his executive with their foothold in the Gulf Province again. Morehari said they currently have an eight club competition playing in A and Reserve grade divisions. “We are in our third weekend of season proper and the competition is popular amongst residents in Kerema town,” he added. Kouoru added they will also be encouraging the 10 local level government associations to be aligned to the Kerema League, so that there is a pathway created for those hidden talents in the villages.
