Kilifi hoteliers warned over curios sale HOTEL owners have been told to close curio shops within their premises. Kilifi county tourism executive Alphonce Tokali said that all-inclusive business deny curio and sculpture dealers a chance to earn a living through the curio business. Speaking to the Star in Malindi the executive said that some hotels in the county offer all-under-one-roof businesses a fact he said was unfair to other business people. “There is a big challenge for those who sell curios and sculptors because there is competition from hotels. If all services are offered in the same area, then those who offer the same services elsewhere will not earn anything,” he said. He noted that hotel owners should only concentrate in their core business of accommodating and catering. The executive said that it was not fair for hotel investors to engage themselves in all trades while leaving others to incur losses. “Let hotels concentrate in their core business and leave curio and sculptors traders to do their business. He said that plans are underway to dialogue with hotel owners to ensure that a lasting solution to the problem is reached. Malindi Handcraft Co-operative Society Secretary General Benjamin Mwanzia lamented that most hotels in the area curio shops in their hotels. Mwanzia said that a huge per cent of tourists prefer buying curios from hotels because they are readily available. “We are incurring a lot of losses in the curio and sculptor business. Despite the low season which has led to many losses, hotel investors have also taken over our business leaving us with only a small per cent of the customers,” he said.
