LOVE IN THE SHADOWS He kissed her in the shadows and then he said goodbye he told her that he loved her true saw the tears fall from her eyes he promised her the world that day and then he rode away to fight a war in foreign lands she knew he coudnt stay The months went by and years did fly not one letter did she get no kisses in a written note no pidgeon carrier fly regrets no messages of love were sent and the war came to a close she cried herself to sleep at night in her fancy frilly clothes The years rolled by and life went on and she married just for trust her suitors had been many though most were out for lust her pocket book was full of lines of poets chosen verse though her heart was torn asunder from a soldiers words and curse Then later in her autumn years her husband passed away the shadows of her past returned and filled her lonesome days her children had all left the home and all had gone away when a letter came from foreign shores so many miles away The lines were writ in elegance and the tone was plain to see was written in italic verse and full of honesty a soldier wounded in the ranks and hospitalised and battles sore with damage to the mind and soul and oh so battlesore The visit promised eager heart and solemn trust and true she met him on the platform two that day in Waterloo he looked so dashing smart and lean with his maturity and faith he kissed her in the shadows there and tears ran down her face
