LULAC Hosts Health Bilingual Town Hall for Hispanic Community As Part of LULAC’s Latinos Living Healthy Initiative and Hispanic Health Week of Action Latinos represent one third of the nation’s uninsured yet Latinos have higher rates of chronicdiseases and are less likely to receive the preventative care they need. Considering the current state of Latino health, it is crucial that the community participate in the newly reformed healthcare system. “Once all the technical difficulties have been taken care of, the health care website will be a useful tool for our community to register for health care coverage,” said LULAC National President Margaret Moran. “In the meantime, our job is to ensure that our community understands the process and knows the options that are available to get information on health care plans and enroll for health care coverage. This is particularly important because we only have until March 31, 2014 for people in our community to register for health care.” In order to ensure that the Latino community has access to important information, LULAC, in collaboration with the Latin American Youth Center, is hosting a health town hall in Spanish where experts, community leaders, and promot@res will discuss the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, how to navigate the Healthcare Marketplace, and the Open Enrollment process. The town hall takes place during National Hispanic Health Week of Action, and additional topics for discussion will include the process for purchasing and comparing health plans, where you can go for help, and how to avoid scams and other fraudulent activities. The town hall included the participation of Dr. Joxel Garcia, Director, DC Department of Health; Mayra Alvarez, Director of Public Health Policy, Office of Health Reform, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; Sinsi-Hernandez-Cancio, Health Equity Director, FamiliesUSA; Vanessa Gonzalez-Plumhoff, Director of Latino Leadership & Engagement, Planned Parenthood Federation of America; Alicia Wilson, Executive Director, La Clinica Del Pueblo; and Elianne Ramos, Principal and CEO, Speak Hispanic LLC, Vice-Chair of Marketing and PR, LATISM. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the nation’s largest and oldest civil rights volunteer-based organization that empowers Hispanic Americans and builds strong Latino communities. Headquartered in Washington, DC, with 900 councils around the United States and Puerto Rico, LULAC’s programs, services and advocacy address the most important issues for Latinos, meeting critical needs of today and the future.
