Label co-founder Alec Hanley Bemis has this to say about the death of an important inspiration in his life. This is cross-posted from his personal Facebook page: Robert Stone, my teacher, has died. I was off the internet yesterday so just heard the news. Stone lent me a dose of the vision & clarity & intention one needs to make a life in art. I took two writing classes from him at Yale; but his impact on me -- as someone that was *doing it* in the world -- was much greater than that. A few years after graduation, I visited him in his office and asked him What should someone do if they’re interested in a creative life? You should do whatever the hell you want, he said, bored by the question, but spinning it into a lesson that still strikes me as very wise & very true. I think of him often, reflecting on every word he ever had for me, including those in this Q&A I did with him in 2007, soon after he published his memoir, Prime Green. His publishers thought enough of it that it was reprinted in a subsequent paperback edition of the memoir. Id like to think he read it too, and thought it represented him well, as the man I knew — a salty, cynical but large-hearted artist, sucking marrow from the bones of the world > laweekly/arts/stone-warm-sober-2147062
