Last fall, I watched PBS Three Men Go to War, a documentary on the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis. This film reveals how President John F. Kennedy outwitted the most warlike, fascistic Cold Warriors in the U.S. like Air Force General, Curtis LeMay. Kennedy pushed the world to the brink of nuclear catastrophe. The warhawks were elated, believing that this crisis would set the stage for an invasion of Cuba to destroy the Cuban Revolution. The program explicitly attributes this view to LeMay who openly pressed JFK to order an invasion. Then at the last minute, a negotiated deal ended the crisis. Soviet missiles were withdrawn from Cuba. The U.S. was committed NOT TO INVADE CUBA. The deal also banned U.S. nuclear missiles in Turkey. The documentary reports that LeMay and the other warmongers were ENRAGED by this agreement. Just over a year later, President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. I think we should remember this history as President Obama moves to normalize relations with Cuba. I hope and pray that the Secret Service is on it highest alert.
