Last night, I saw the film, Nightcrawler, a crime thriller about a young man, Louis Lou Bloom who begins nightcrawling, a form of freelance journalism taking place at night. He goes from car accidents to murders filming what he can and then selling the footage to a local news station. But Lous actions soon begin to border on the immoral. Especially after he films the aftermath of the murder of a family in their Granada Hills mansion. Pros: For the first film directed by Dan Gilroy, he did an excellent job. My eyes were glued to the screen pretty much the entire time. I kept wondering what was going to happen next. Jake Gyllenhaal was fantastic in this film. He played his role very convincingly and I felt somewhat intimidated by his screen presence. The film also explores the aspects of morality, especially in the field of journalism. When are boundaries pushed too far? Does an individual no longer have a right to privacy? Nightcrawler explores these issues. Cons: Some of the scenes are slow moving which is in contrast to the fast paced action of the film. Also, the film contains some graphic violence, so you may wish to refrain from bringing small children. Overall, I give this film three and a half stars out of a possible five.
