Last night, Tanya and I watched a touching documentary, Alive - TopicsExpress

Last night, Tanya and I watched a touching documentary, Alive Inside. A film (now on Netflix Canada) about a social worker who accesses seniors lost in dementia through the simple act of listening to music. The film was stunning in its ability to capture the immediate effects music had on individuals who were otherwise lost to the world. What we learned is that this man, and through his organization musicandmemory.org are collecting iPods (old Shuffles, etc.) and putting them in the hands of those affected by dementia. If you have an old iPod, let us know, we will collect them, and ship them en masse, paying for the shipping costs. This organization, Music & Memory strips the iPod and then fills it with music geared specifically for the individual. So often, Tanya and I are learning and teaching about the effects of music with our very youngest people, but we were stunned last night to see the effects of music on our elders suffering from dementia.
