Last night on the way to Amy Daly s colleagues Do, I entertained Albert in the back of the car. Heaven knows where the nursery rhyme popped up from, but it was from my mother, and required hand actions. Heres the church, theres the steeple, open the doors and theres all the people. He giggled all the way there. Some times if you place your hands the wrong way the church is empty and Albert was perplexed, so I did it again the right way and all the people reappeared and I made them dance. He was joyous!! Precious. Amy had to get up at 0545 for a 14 hour shift and I was babysitting, so I slid into her warm spot in her bed as she left to go to work. I hid under the sheet with only my hair showing so that Albert would still think his mum was there. Three hours later he woke up, faced Amys bed expecting to see her there and looked mortified to see me there (I never look good in the morning), and then he did the most amazing thing...he went through all the hand actions of Heres a church... Albert is SO clever. This let me know some of his cognitive functioning...he recognised me as the person who taught him something new...hes securely attached to Amy to be able to stand separation, he learns quickly despite some delays, he recognises when something is wrong, but when its put right he is able to experience fun and sheer joy! Hes utterly amazing and teaches me...he makes me question all the cognitive psychology I know, and reinforces attachment theory and the role of love and play...the Free Child ego state!! X
