Last night the EMTs and police from several agencies arrived at our homestead on Gurno Lake on the LCO reservation in the middle of the night to assist in reviving my youngest granddaughter Autumn Rose, 18 months. I was awakened from my household as my son shouted for me to help with his daughter at his trailer as he had awoken up to find her in a seizure and not breathing, apparently due to a fever that came on during the night. It is not hard to become emotionally affected by such a small girl that was obviously in great difficulty, shaking, stiff, puffy closed eyes, lethargic with no signs of breathing. It is one of those events that pretty much scares the heck out of you and makes you realize how fragile the lives of those around you really are. Suffice to say that once we could hear her breathing a little bit, and sirens coming close you knew some professional help was on the way. We often forget that when it comes time to save a life, our firefighters, EMTs. and police officers put themselves in harms way rushing to the scene, and that in the final minutes of relief or assistance, it makes not difference if they are Native or non-Native, tribal, county or funded in some other way. We often forget to say Thank You, for their actions. Some members of our community even despise some officials for simply wearing a badge -- but I doubt if it would make any difference to them when it came time to save a life. As a reporter I have often watched their team work and action, public servants, and their willingness to risk their lives and safety to get others out of harms way. Thank You. Thank you for what you have done, and what you have to put up with at times. Thank you for wanting our community to be a better and safer place. Thank you for helping to save lives.
