Last night we held a very good discussion session on the current crisis in Israel. Only 5 people showed up but beside from the light turn out, everything else about it was perfect. Those who were there opened up and we were able to have a very meaningful exchange of ideas and feelings. For 3 of the 5, this discussion was very personal. One of them has a daughter living in Netanya and the other two - a couple - have a daughter there now on a Birthright program. All three of them were there in Israel - together for the wedding of the daughter living there - when the war broke out. Many questions were placed on the table and, of course, no definitive answers were found. It would take the Messiah to find a way of permanently and peacefully settling the dispute between Hamas and Israel. One of the more moving aspects of our discussion was in how people shared how torn they were about the deaths of Palestinian children at the hands of the Israeli military. They had no questions about the necessity for Israel to defend itself and strike back at Hamas but still these deaths weigh so heavily upon them. We all agreed that it is precisely those feelings of remorse that set us and Israel apart from Hamas and from so many other combatants in the world today. We fight because we are forced to, not because we want to, and we never lose our compassion for the victims of the conflict. This was a great session and I am so glad we held it!
