Learn Our History Today: On July 31, 1763, the Battle of Bloody Run was fought near Detroit, Michigan, during Pontiac’s Rebellion. Since May 1763, Indian warriors under Chief Pontiac had been laying siege to British held Fort Detroit, and by July a relief force was organized and put under the command of Captain James Dalyell. Dalyell commanded a force of over 200 troops, including some of the famous Roger’s Rangers under the command of Robert Rogers. This force of men hoped to attack and surprise the Indians near their encampment, but things did not go as planned. As the British were crossing a small bridge over a creek, the Indians sprung a preemptive ambush. British troops were cut down left and right as the Indians poured a withering fire on them. However, the British troops were able to establish a small defensive perimeter, saving the force from complete destruction. In the end, over half the British force was downed, including their commander, James Dalyell. Fort Detroit would remain under siege for more than three more months. Also, on July 31, 1975, Jimmy Hoffa disappeared from the parking lot of a restaurant in Detroit, Michigan, never to be seen again. He had been one of the most influential labor leaders in the United States at the time of his disappearance, which was believed to be a mafia hit. Conspiracy theories have been floating around ever since then because conclusive evidence was never found linking anyone specific to the crime. In addition, his remains have still not been found, leaving the whole affair shrouded in mystery to this day.
