Lemongrass When people are asked which scent embodies Cambodia more often than not the reply is a resounding Lemongrass!!! As you travel through the Cambodian country side you will notice that almost every single house is more or less surrounded by the long, green blades of Lemongrass plants and it is for good reason. Besides the belief that Lemongrass guards against snakes (they don’t like the prickly leaves apparently) this humble perennial not only adds flavor to our food but can be used to treat an absolute plethora of ailments from hair loss to cellulite, acne, aching muscles and most famously as a natural insect repellant. Honestly, the list goes on and on. Let me share with you just some of the reasons why I think Lemongrass is one of the most wonderful plants on the planet :) The sunny, zesty, lemony scent of lemongrass is said to have antidepressant properties and is beneficial for nervous and stress-related conditions. It is helpful in alleviating anxiety and depression. It helps to strengthen the nervous system. The next time you have a bad day pop 5-6 drops of Lemongrass Essential oil in your oil burner or light a Lemongrass scented candle (as long as its 100% natural, no Chemicals please), make yourself a cup of tea or pour yourself a wine if it was a really bad one and sit back in your favourite chair, breathe and let the Lemongrass work its magic! Your skin loves Lemongrass too. Its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties means it helps fight bacterial and fungal infections on the skin. Use it on cuts and scratches and those pesky white spots that ruin your flawless, glowing tan. It also has a positive effect on your body’s ability to use Vitamin A which makes it helpful for skin issues such as acne and pimples. It helps to brighten the skin and eyes and clear up oily skin thus improving acne. Its astringent properties also means it helps to minimize pores, limit oil secretions and provide skin firming results. This along with boosting circulation make it a perfect treatment for cellulite, our Saarti Lemongrass Salt Scrub is a must have when getting your bod bikini ready! As an added bonus Lemongrass may improve bad body odor by controlling excessive sweating when used topically. It is also great for your hair as it fights hair loss, balances oiliness and its antibacterial properties keep your scalp in tip top condition, thus promoting hair growth. It also strengthens the hair follicle which further prevents hair loss. There is no better way to start the day than washing your hair with Lemongrass Shampoo and Conditioner, your hair smells amazing AND your in a sunny mood. Winning!!! Lemongrass is also believed to have powerful pain relieving properties. It helps to alleviate muscle cramps and tension by relaxing the muscles which leads to the reduction of pain-related symptoms. This makes it useful for all types of pain including abdominal pain, headaches, joint pains, muscle pains, muscle cramps and stomach ache. It makes the perfect post work out rub down as it has been linked to increasing the body’s ability to repair damaged connective tissue such as cartilage, ligaments, muscles and tendons. Another benefit is improved blood circulation. At the first sign of a cold and flu chop some Lemongrass and ginger and make into a tea. Another name for Lemongrass is ‘fever grass’ and this is because it helps relieve fever. It kills germs and frees up your respiratory system by reducing mucus. It is packed full of immunity boosting vitamins and minerals so drink it to prevent colds as well as treat them. Last but not least Lemongrass is a powerful NATURAL anti mosquito repellent. This is due to the potent Citral content. While Lemongrass smells lovely and fresh to us, mossies and other flying insects absolutely hate it. It’s the star ingredient in our all natural bug spray and balm and in most natural insect repellents on the market. So there you have it folks, Lemongrass is AMAZING and is an essential to have in the garden and medicine cabinet. Let me know what you use Lemongrass for!
