Lessons for our HIV negative/positive divide, gay on gay HIV shaming, and HIV criminalization in general -- from Sarah Schulmans upcoming book: Human life is filled with risk, and perhaps the greatest danger is other people over-stating harm. Being the object of over-reaction means being treated in a way that one does not deserve, which is the centerpiece of injustice. Yet, the prohibition on protesting that over-reaction is often the excuse for even more severely punishing these acts of resistance. Extreme over-reaction to conflict and difference damages people, communities and cultures and can destroy them. There is a continuum of pathology in blame, shunning, scapegoating, group bullying, incarcerating, occupying, assaulting and killing. They avoid the work of self-acknowledgement required for resolution and instead produce more pain. Refusing to resolve conflict is a negative action in the world and yet many families, cliques, communities, religions, governments and nations choose this option all the time.
