Lessons in Witchcraft 9 - Cord / Knot Magick This form of magick is one of the simplest to preform and it can be put towards any magickal goal. A magickal cord is a three strand braid that uses 1, 2, or 3 colours. Both yarn and embroidery floss are made up of threads that are grouped together, a strand of yarn or embroidery floss is made up of these threads ( do not separate the threads of the strand as this will make the cord to thin). If desired you can double or triple the strands to make a thicker cord. Those who choose to can even go so far as to make their own yarn : card the clean wool/spinning fibres to align the fibres, spin the fibres with a drop spindle or spinning wheel, dye the yarn the colour that you desire (or leave it plain), let the dyed yarn dry completely, and then braid it into a cord. Embroidery floss will create a lovely magickal cord, and you can get 3 skeins of embroidery floss for under a dollar. Both the spinning process as well as the braiding process weaves power/magick into the cord. The cingulumn or ritual cord is part of the ritual vestments that are worn by most, if not all Wiccans. Within many Wiccan traditions the cingulumn is a nine foot red three strand braided cord that is made by the Wiccan/Witch who wears it. The length is related to the dimensions of the traditional Wiccan circle .To create a 9 foot circle outside, place a stick in the ground at the centre of the ritual area and loop the cingulumn around it. You can then use it to trace the boundary of your ritual area. The number 3 is seen as a sacred number of power/magick within the context of Wiccan theology. The colour red is used as a connection to the Great Goddess, She who is the Great Mother of all that is was and ever shall be. A second ritual cord can be worn by those who are dedicated to a specific Goddess or God. This cord will display the sacred colours of that Deity. For example White/Red/Black for Hekate, Blue/Gold/White for Isis, Green/Brown/Black for Herne, or Black/Gold/White for Anubis. 9 Knot Spell 1-6-4-8-3-9-5-7-2 (This is the pattern of the knots) - Choose the colour or colours that will align your cord with the goal of the spell that you are casting. - Bind the first knot and say...By knot of one, my spell has here begun. . Then braid the length of the cord, while thinking of your spell goal. - When the cord is completely braided bind the second knot and then say ... By knot of two, that which I weave doth come true. - Using the pattern shown above to bind the remaining 7 knots. This pattern serves to move the cord back and forth through your hands in order to further infuse the cord with magick. As you do say... By knot of three, as I do will it so mote it be. By knot of four, the powerful magick of my spell I here store. By knot of five, this spell with my magick is alive. By knot of six, the power of my magick into this charm I here fix. By knot of seven, this spell weaves the magick of land, sea, and the heavens. By knot of eight, my goal is fate. By knot of nine, my goal (name the goal) is mine! - Hold the knotted cord in your power hand and infuse it one more time with magick. As you do speak your incantation over the cord so that your breath falls upon the cord ( this is done to infuse the cord with the breath of life). - The completed cord can be kept on your altar, worn on a wrist or ankle, or carried with you until the goal is achieved. - If desired an herbal charm can be bound into knot #3. - This spell can be augmented into a spell form that is known as The Witches Ladder. For this spell a feather, an herbal charm, a wooden rune tile, a silver charm ( such as a pentagram), or a written petition is bound into each knot. The 9 Knot Spell is a subtle form of magick in that unless you know what it is, few people would recognize the charm as a tool of magick at first glance. A knotted cord can also be used when praying to keep track of the number of times that a specific prayer has been spoken. This would make the cord a good focus for protection spells that are used to create and maintain the wards that we weave. **Fyre Star**
