On Earthquake Threat: Two years ago, I conducted a research on possible effects of high intensity earthquakes on our citys present structures. In the process, I had a one on one legislative query at my office with the head of our local Philvolcs. I remember posting it here on fb. In that query, it was found out that earthquakes, no matter how possible, cannot be precisely predicted specially in pointing out the exact day or date of occurrence. However, it was learned that the Sulu Trench is possibly building up pressure and may result to a high intensity earthquake which would affect even our city. Philvolcs historical data reveal that the more powerful earthquakes experienced by Zamboanga City in the past were caused by the Sulu Trench anomalies more than that of the Cotabato Trench which affects Zamboanga as well. The local earthquake authority even showed me some facts about a powerful earthquake a century ago that caused the momentary rise of sea water level up to our present city hall area. This recent talks about an earthquake threat that has been circulating recently as a result of an article on Manilastandardtoday should not frighten us. The same warning is constant. The possibility is indeed there. It may happen not only on Sept. 13. It may happen even tonight... tomorrow, next year, and even many years from now. It can actually happen anytime. We therefore should simply be ready and come up with mitigating measures to keep us safe and to avoid damages to our properties. We should consider this bad possibilities in our plans for new structures. We should not try saving on required materials for our houses and buildings at the expense of structural integrity. But again, let us not panic. Earthquakes are beyond our control and it is unpredictable. It should never be the reason for us to be afraid. It would be ideal for us to be prepared structurally, physically and even spiritually.
