Let me tell you about one of the greatest things that anyone as ever done for me. So much so that I cherish the memory still. While on Unimak, I would save up a years worth of leave and take it at once - 30 days at home - in the warm South, among family, friends, and my girlfriend. Now to get there required a hike (with duffel) all the way up State Street to the bus terminal. Then a long bus ride through southern Massachusetts, stopping for riders along the way. Once in Boston, it was a taxi to Logan. Seems like that whole evolution was 3-4 hours. But I had home in my eyes so none of this really mattered. But after my 30 days were over, I was back on the plane headed north. As the plane landed at Logan, it was dark and I was very tired. I was filled with homesickness, and I especially dreaded that another few hour lay ahead of me to get back to Unimak. Taxi fees, bus fares, long rides. These thoughts weighed heavily on me as I walked up the ramp and into the airport. But when I emerged into the waiting area, the first thing I saw were the beaming faces of Steve Jensen and Doug Tardiff. Steve had convinced Doug to drive up to Boston to pick me up. I will never (ever) be able to adequately convey the relief that flooded through me, and the gratitude. And since were talking about Steve, of course there was a beer waiting in the car. This is the very definition of friendship. That, shipmates, is Steve Jensen.
