Letter Comparing Dreams To the Editor: Kelly Bulkeley’s Sunday Review article about dream analysis (“Data-Mining Our Dreams,” Oct. 20) points to an exciting area for interdisciplinary research, a comparison of quantitative analysis with other modes of dream interpretation. Mr. Bulkeley cites the traditions of “vision quest” and “dream incubation” as enabling people to derive insights from dreams. In our contemporary culture, psychoanalytic psychotherapy often yields important insights through free association, which taps into the same unconscious processes that created the dream. Comparative study of the new digital methods with psychoanalytic approaches could lead to cross-validation or new areas of exploration for both fields. J.
